La Citadelle Fun Track Montgenèvre

New for Winter 2025-26

This winter, Montgenèvre - one of the oldest and most charming ski resorts in France - is unveiling an exciting new addition to its ski area: La Citadelle, a fun new themed track located at the top of the Gondrans chairlift.

Perfect for families, intermediates, and anyone looking for something a bit different, La Citadelle combines history, play, and mountain scenery in one unique ski experience.

A tribute to Montgenèvre’s history

The design of La Citadelle takes inspiration from the fortifications of the Maginot Line, a famous series of mountain defenses that form part of the local heritage. The route celebrates Montgenèvre's unique position as a historic border village between France and Italy, with the remains of forts such as Fort Janus and Fort du Chaberton still overlooking the valley today. Your friendly Ski Miquel host will point them out whilst taking you around the ski area.

Throughout the track, you will find creative touches with playful references to this history - from imitation bunkers to lookout turrets - all crafted with imagination and attention to detail.

The route and experience

The course follows a gentle blue-level slope, similar in feel to an easy boardercross. It winds gracefully down the mountain, featuring smooth banked turns, gentle rollers, and interactive obstacles that make it great fun for the kids and I'm sure a few adults too!

Along the way, you’ll pass through arches, bells, and hoops that add sound and movement to your run. Decorative features like fake dynamite bars, detonators, and construction-style towers give the impression of skiing through a playful fortress zone.

The observation turret

One of the highlights of La Citadelle is the observation turret. Midway down the course, you can stop to take in the view - it’s the perfect photo spot, and don't forget to share any photos on the Ski Miquel WhatsApp group! Inside, you’ll find a telescope and an orientation table to help you pick out the surrounding peaks, including the mighty Mont Chaberton, which dominates the skyline above Montgenèvre.

It’s a great place to pause, catch your breath, and soak up the incredible scenery before continuing your descent.

Where to find it

You’ll find La Citadelle at the top of the Télésiège des Gondrans, on the northern side of the ski area. The slope is easily accessible from Montgenèvre's main lift system and connects seamlessly into the wider 'Milky Way' ski area (Via Lattea), offering over 400km of pistes across France and Italy, which the Ski Miquel hosts run a weekly trip to (subject to weather and snow conditions).

For Ski Miquel guests staying at our chalet-hotels Elise or Lucille or chalet Ava , it’s just a short walk over the road and up the lifts, so you can add a little adventure to your morning runs, or take the kids for a spin after their ESF Ski School lessons to use up that last bit of energy!
