Saalbach-Hinterglemm is heading back onto the Alpine Ski World Cup calendar, and for British skiers February 2027 is shaping up to be a brilliant time to visit. On Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th February 2027, the resort is scheduled to host two major men’s speed events on the Zwölferkogel: a men’s downhill and a men’s Super-G.
The announcement was made by the Austrian Ski Federation on 7 May 2026, confirming the return of the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup to Saalbach following its role as host of the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in 2025.
For Ski Miquel guests, this creates something special: the chance to combine a proper week of skiing in one of Austria’s largest linked ski areas with the atmosphere of a world-class sporting event whilst staying at the Chalet-Hotel Christina.
Saalbach is Back on the World Cup Stage
Saalbach-Hinterglemm has already proved itself as a major international race venue. The resort hosted the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in 2025, and the 2027 World Cup weekend is a clear sign that Saalbach remains one of Austria’s most trusted and capable ski racing destinations.
The races are planned for the Zwölferkogel, one of the most famous mountains in the Saalbach-Hinterglemm area. This is serious racing terrain: steep, fast, technical and dramatic. For spectators, speed events are among the most exciting disciplines to watch live. The downhill is the purest test of courage, line choice and speed; the super-G adds more turning and tactical control while still being brutally fast.
The official Saalbach release notes that the resort’s selection reflects the expertise and trust built through previous major events, especially the 2025 World Championships. Saalbach’s mayor Alois Hasenauer described the return as a World Cup spectacle, while the tourism association highlighted the combination of racing, entertainment and the special atmosphere in the village.
Exploring the 'Skicircus'
Saalbach is not just a race venue, it is one of Austria’s great ski holiday resorts. The 'Skicircus' offers 270km of slopes around Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn, with 140km of blue runs, 112km of red runs and 18km of black runs, supported by 70 cableways and lifts. There are more than 60 traditional ski huts, as well as snow parks, freeride areas, floodlit slopes and toboggan runs, and Carol our resort manager will be happy to show around and share her 20+ years of experience in the mountains.
The variety matters. A World Cup weekend is exciting, but most guests are still coming for the skiing. Saalbach gives you the best of both: high-profile racing and a vast, modern, lift-linked ski area where intermediates can cover serious distance, confident skiers can chase big circuits, and mixed-ability groups can still find plenty to enjoy.

Electric Atmosphere in the Village
The whole resort changes when World Cup teams are in town - Flags, music, team jackets, television crews, sponsor stands, packed terraces and a real sense that the ski world has arrived in town.
Saalbach is particularly good for this because it already has a lively, walkable Austrian village feel. Unlike some purpose-built resorts, Saalbach has character, restaurants, mountain huts and a famous après-ski culture, you should try the Goaßstall bar during a World Cup. The World Cup weekend should add another layer of energy: race-day crowds, live commentary, evening entertainment and a celebratory end-of-February atmosphere.
Staying with Ski Miquel in Saalbach
Ski Miquel guests stay at the Chalet-Hotel Christina, which is only a short walk from both the skiing and the village and benefits from a short transfer time from Salzburg Airport, with a typical coach journey of around 1.5 hours.
With recently refurbished bathrooms, our chalet-hotel offers great value and is always in the bottom 10% of holiday package prices for trips to Saalbach.
This location should make the World Cup week especially appealing. Our guests can enjoy the convenience of a catered chalet-hotel style holiday in the Christina, with the support of Ski Miquel’s in-resort team, and access to one of Austria’s best ski areas at a time when the world’s elite racers are also in town.
Watch the Downhill & Super-G Live
If you've only ever watched ski racing on television, you need to experience it in person. On the screen, the speed looks controlled, but when you're standing beside a World Cup course you can't understand how they survive! The scale, the noise, the thighs, the aggression, the commitment (blind faith), all become very clear!
The downhill is the headline, the fastest Alpine discipline, with racers taking direct lines and carrying huge speed over terrain changes. The Super-G is slightly more technical, with more turning than downhill, but at much higher speed than the giant slalom. Together, they make a superb race weekend.
For a ski holiday guest, there is also something inspiring about watching the best in the world and then clipping into your own skis afterwards. You probably won't ski like a World Cup racer, but you will almost certainly look at the mountain differently.
Build the race into your ski holiday
The smartest way to enjoy the World Cup is to treat it as a highlight within a full ski week, rather than the only reason to travel.
A good plan would be:
- Start the holiday with a bang - The Ski Miquel flight time allows you to catch a late afternoon of racing on the Saturday.
- Take advantage of our ski concierge service in the morning to avoid to the crowds and then get dropped off in the heart of the action to watch the full day of racing.
- Enjoy the village atmosphere after the racing, especially in the late afternoon and evening.
- Ski the wider 'Skicircus' later in the week when the resort is a bit quieter.
Enjoy the race with Ski Miquel
For anyone who wants a ski holiday with something genuinely memorable built in, this is one to plan early for. A week in Saalbach is a great choice for skiers who want a large Austrian ski area, modern lifts, mountain huts and après-ski. Add the return of the Alpine Ski World Cup, and February 2027 becomes a standout opportunity.
So we'll see you on the slopes, and don't forget your cow bell!
