5 Best Things - Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein is packed with charm, historic character and epic skiing, so it's easy to see why we love it so much. The Chalet-Hotel Tannenburg gives you the perfect base from which to explore the Gastein Valley and all it has to offer.

Here are five of our favourite things about Bad Gastein:

Skiing in Bad Gastein

1. Varied skiing

Bad Gastein lies in an enviable location in the Gastein Valley and provides access to a great variety of skiing in 5 different areas - Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein, Dorfgastein, Sportgastein and Graukogel - all on one lift pass. Each area offers something different, so you can get superb skiing whatever the weather! Steady skiers and snowboarders can cruise the whole west side on a great range of red and blue runs, including the longest piste in the Central Eastern Alps (an impressive 11km long!) and then take the super new gondola lift back up from Bad Hofgastein. Our ski hosts will be happy to show you around the valley and the wonderful mountain huts for your lunch stops.

2. Austrian architecture

Bursting with Austrian charm, Bad Gastein grew during a boom in spa holidays in the early 19th Century, hosting the rich and famous from all over the world, and it was known as a playground for the Tsars, Kings and Emperors of Europe. The town feels like it could be in a Wes Anderson movie, with light pastel-coloured hotels nestled between the steep valley sides. The centre of the town has a deep gorge with a thundering waterfall, and surrounding it are the magnificent snowy peaks of Graukogel, Kreuzkogel and Stubnerkogel. There are also many superb restaurants and bars just waiting to be explored!

3. Lively après-ski

The Austrians certainly know how to have a good time, both on and off the slopes. There are a great number of mountain huts, which our ski hosts will be happy to show you for your lunch stops and refreshment breaks on the way home, and they give the resort a fantastic jovial feel that only the Austrians can provide. Back in the village there are some great bars, including Haeggbloms, the Lederhosenbar and the famous Silver Bullet. Expect live music, schnapps, and plenty of dancing - Just make sure you get back to the Tannenburg in time for the pre-dinner canapés!

4. Famous spas

For those who speak a bit of German, you will know that 'Bad' means 'bath', and there are no shortage of spas in Bad Gastein. The best of them is also located closest to the Chalet-Hotel Tannenburg - The Felsentherme is located just off the main road and inside you will find a number of modern swimming pools, including a fantastic large outdoor pool, from which you can watch the skiers returning back to the town. There is also a great variety of treatments on offer, so it's the perfect place to soothe your aching muscles after a busy day out on the mountain with our ski hosts.

5. Visit Salzburg

Take a trip to the home of Mozart and the Sound of Music! Salzburg is truly one of most iconic cities in Europe and it looks stunning in the winter with the white peaks of the Alps surrounding it. The mighty castle rising out of the centre gives you an incredible view of Salzburg and the mountains glinting on the horizon, so it's a must-see whilst you are there if you do decide to visit. There are also many great restaurants and cafés to explore, and it's only 1.5 hours by train from the centre of Bad Gastein, so it's easy to get there and back in a day.
