Skiing Schilthorn to Lauterbrunnen

My summit-to-valley day, with big views, flowing turns and a cosy Rosa finish.

Piz Gloria: a licence to enjoy the view

By Dean, Ski Miquel’s Resort Manager in Lauterbrunnen

If you are choosing a Lauterbrunnen chalet ski holiday for proper mountain days, this is one I would put on your list. My Schilthorn route starts high, delivers some glorious turns and finishes with the valley opening below you. The full itinerary includes steep black pistes, so I recommend it to confident skiers and snowboarders who are comfortable on blacks in the day’s conditions.

At 2,970 metres, the Schilthorn rather overdoes the scenery. I take a moment before setting off: serrated peaks, open sky and the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant perched above it all like a particularly ambitious flying saucer. It starred as Blofeld’s headquarters in the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. I cannot promise a secret-agent exit, but black 10 provides quite enough excitement without anyone chasing us.

Black 10 and my favourite blue: Engetal

I start on black 10, an exposed summit descent that deserves attention as well as admiration. I stop for photographs somewhere safe before the skiing, rather than attempting wildlife-documentary camera work mid-turn.

A flatter linking track follows. I keep my speed controlled and anticipate the change of gradient; on a snowboard, an unexpected flat can turn a majestic mountain adventure into an impromptu walking holiday. In case have not guested it yet I'm the only Ski Miquel resort manager that snowboards.

Then comes blue 11, Engetal: probably my favourite blue in the area. Wide, open and flowing, it is a wonderful place to settle into long, easy turns. Nearby piste 9, Direttissima, is the black for those want to keep the pitch excitement going. I keep that distinction very clear when planning the day. I follow the signed connection via red 13, Stellifluh, towards the Muttleren chair.

View of the Schilthorn

Muttleren, Kanonenrohr and the run towards Winteregg

From Muttleren, I choose broad red 15, Bietenhorn, or black 17, Fis. The black option has that natural halfpipe feel I love, with the mountain folding around the run. Red 15 is my choice when I fancy roomier, flowing turns.

The route continues towards black 16, Kanonenrohr–Mürren. Its steep opening gives way to a curling mountain passage. My tip is to pause safely at the top for the Jungfrau and valley views: a very respectable excuse for giving the legs a breather.

I then follow red 5, Palace-Run, take the Maulerhubel chair and choose blue 2, Dreistern, or red 1, Winteregg–Oberberg, towards Winteregg. This is a linked ski journey with chairlift rides, not one continuous descent. Taking red 15 does not avoid black 16.

Lauterbrunnen village

Can I ski all the way to Lauterbrunnen?

My usual finish is Winteregg, where I take the train to Grütschalp and the cable car down to Lauterbrunnen. If there is space, I like the right-hand side facing downhill for the valley reveal. Those enormous rock walls make the village look like a model railway with an extravagant scenery budget.

Red 3, Lauterbrunnen, is the alternative valley descent when snow cover permits, which can be most of the peak season. I treat it as a bonus, never the foundation of the day’s plan. If it is closed, the train-and-cable-car return is the plan.

Check the official piste and lift report, the Mürren–Schilthorn map and the last connections before setting out or just ask you Bar Ski Concierge and they will do the hard work for you and check everything plus conditions on Snowforecast. Their plenty of off piste to hand along this route but that is for another day with professional local guide.

My advice for planning the day

I judge the route by the hardest required sections, not its loveliest blue. Black 10 and black 16 make this a day for confident skiers; for a gentler outing, I would help you plan around the lower slopes instead.

I also leave time for the journey home. A stop at Winteregg is far more enjoyable when I am admiring the mountains rather than conducting a frantic timetable investigation.

Our ski concierge service is a sociable way to discover suitable pistes and local lunch stops during your holiday. I recommend checking the concierge ability requirements before booking: hosting is on-piste and does not replace lessons. Routes depend on the group and conditions, so this particular summit itinerary is not a guaranteed daily programme.

Chalet Rosa in Lauterbrunnen

Book your Lauterbrunnen chalet-hotel ski holiday

After a day like this, I rather like the prospect of Chalet-Hotel Rosa: a traditional Swiss building in the village, a welcoming lounge, a bar and a log fire. It is around six minutes’ walk from the lifts, so allow for that village stroll when planning your mornings.

My resort snapshot: Lauterbrunnen is a valley base for exploring both Mürren–Schilthorn and the Wengen side of the Jungfrau Ski Region by mountain transport. I love the variety: dramatic summit skiing one day, a different mountain outlook the next, with the same cosy base to return to.

See Rosa holiday prices and available dates, or ask our team to help book your chalet holiday. For the bigger picture, read our Lauterbrunnen resort guide. I would start with your group’s skiing ability and preferred dates; the mountain daydreaming can follow immediately.
